Welsh Three Peaks Challenge
The Welsh Three Peaks Challenge links the three highest peaks of Wales: Snowdon (1,085 m), Cadair Idris (893 m) and Pen y Fan (886 m). The route covers a total walking distance of 17 miles (27.4 km) with 2,334 m (7,657 ft) of ascent, typically completed in around 19 hours. The three peaks sit across North, Mid and South Wales, so participants travel between locations during the challenge.
There are two common approaches. On guided events, participants have experienced mountain leaders, transport between the peaks, and ongoing support during the challenge. Alternatively, teams can plan their own challenge and provide their own transport between peaks and logistical support.
The Welsh route involves more ascent over a shorter walking distance than the Yorkshire Three Peaks route, which results in steeper climbs. Early starts are typically required because of the distance and travel between peaks. Planning resources mentioned include route notes, a driving route, kit checklists, accommodation and food and drink guidance. The challenge is presented as a multi-stage walking route with options for guided or self-organised participation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
