The Void - Valley-Hi, PA
The Void is a 48 hour out and back endurance event held inside the abandoned Sideling Hill Tunnel in Valley-Hi, PA. Runners complete 63 out and backs through a 1.3 mile corridor, totaling just under 160 miles of paved surface.
The tunnel has no interior lighting, so participants navigate repeated periods of darkness using personal lighting and pacing. The course offers no scenery or variation; runners move from one end to the other, turn around a cone, and return for the next lap. The event is not structured as a race against others; progression depends on individual pacing and choices.
The event uses a Toll Ticket system. At check in each runner receives a physical Toll Ticket that governs how often they may leave the tunnel to access support. The system emphasizes planning and self discipline rather than equalizing conditions among competitors.
Entry requires an application reviewed by the race directors. Priority is given to runners with demonstrated extreme endurance experience. The organizers recommend applicants have completed at least one 100 mile ultramarathon, backyard ultra, FKT, or a comparable extreme endurance event within three years of registration. Participant numbers are limited to 96. The event is organized by ESTEA. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
