Trail Running in Central Pennsylvania

The Lost Turkey Trail Races take place in the ridges and valleys of Central Pennsylvania, specifically within the Allegheny Front region. The event utilizes the Lost Turkey Trail and the surrounding terrain of Blue Knob State Park. Participants encounter a variety of path types, including technical single-track sections and double-track segments. The geography of the area includes significant elevation changes involving steep climbs and descents.

The event offers three distinct distance options for participants:

  • 50k: A point-to-point course starting at the Lost Turkey Trail in Windber and finishing at Chappell's Field.
  • Half-Marathon: A 13.1-mile loop starting at Chappell's Field that includes a climb to the Windber trailhead.
  • 10k(ish): Also known as the Little Turkey, this route climbs to Herman Point before descending to Chappell's Field.

The races are organized by RunHikePlay, Inc, a volunteer-run non-profit organization. Net proceeds from the event are donated to local groups such as the Friends of Blue Knob State Park and the Bedford County Amateur Radio Society. The event is designated as Trail Sisters Approved, which ensures equal podium spots, equal prize money, women's specific apparel, and the provision of menstrual products at aid stations. For the point-to-point 50k distance, shuttle transportation from the finish area to the start line is available for an additional fee.
