The Tick
The Tick is a 57.41 mile point-to-point trail ultra that follows singletrack on the Florida National Scenic Trail through the Ocala National Forest. The course runs from Alexander Springs State Park to the Rodman Reservoir Dam and includes 50 miles plus 7.41 mandatory bonus miles built into the route. The event is capped at 50 participants and there is no registration fee; a suggested donation of $25 per participant is requested.
The route passes through multiple ecosystems including lakes, prairies, marshes, and tall-growth pine and hardwood forests. Trail conditions can include wetlands, uneven surfaces, dense vegetation, and humid, hot weather. Wildlife commonly seen along the trail includes deer, bobcats, black bears, hawks, eagles, scrub jays, rabbits, snakes, turtles, squirrels, and mice; ticks are also noted as a common hazard.
Crew support is mandatory because the event is not self-supported and natural water access is limited. The longest distance between crew-accessible locations is approximately 10.5 miles. Runners are responsible for arranging their own transportation from the finish back to their vehicle. For safety, all runners and their crews must carry a reliable means of communication such as a cell phone or GPS messenger.
The event is organized by Combat Racing, a veteran owned and operated small business that stages trail and ultra events. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
