Route and safety

The course runs between the University of North Carolina and Duke University. On even years the route goes from UNC to Duke; on odd years it goes from Duke to UNC. Start and finish locations are given as the Old Well at UNC and Duke Chapel, alternating by year.

The organizer describes the route as having many challenging sections and significant risks, including but not limited to permanent injury, drowning, or other forms of death.
