The TarDevil 30 Mile Bushwhack
The TarDevil is an annual training run that covers a 30-mile point-to-point route from the Old Well at UNC Chapel Hill to Duke Chapel in Durham. Since 2018 the event has used roughly 90% trail or off-road access, following forests, fields and streams that connect the two campuses.
The run is presented as a non-organized training event facilitated by TarDevil Adventures Inc., a 501c3 based in Chapel Hill, NC. It is not affiliated with any other organization and participants join at their own risk; all liability is assumed by participants. The route includes many sections with significant hazards and risks, which can include permanent injury, drowning or other forms of death.
The annual event is listed in local calendars for the first Saturday in March. Registration for 2024 sold out and 20 runners completed the full distance; proceeds have been used to cover insurance, finishers' shirts and aid station supplies.
