South Shields 10 Mile 10th Anniversary

The South Shields 10 mile race celebrates its tenth anniversary edition along the North East coastline. The event follows a scenic out-and-back route that heads north from the start at Souter Lighthouse. Runners travel along the dramatic cliffs and The Leas, passing notable landmarks such as Marsden Rock, Frenchman's Bay, and Sandhaven Beach.

The course features a mixed surface terrain and takes place on National Trust land. As the route is not closed to the general public, participants share the paths with other park users. Both road and light trail shoes are considered suitable footwear for these conditions, though trail shoes are recommended during wet weather.

Managed by local runners and volunteers, the race serves as a fitness benchmark ahead of the Great North Run. The event is UKA-licensed via the Trail Running Association. Participants must be at least 17 years old to enter.

On-course facilities include:

  • Water and feed stations located at intervals and at the finish line.
  • Toilets available at Souter Lighthouse and near Marsden Grotto.
  • Clearly marked and marshalled paths to guide runners.

Finishers receive a commemorative 10th Anniversary medal, provided the entry is made by the specific cutoff date in July. Awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
