The La Sportiva Lake District Mountain Trial

The Lake District Mountain Trial is an annual mountain navigation event held in mid September at different venues. The 71st edition is scheduled for Sunday 13th September 2026 at Seathwaite Farm, Borrowdale (postcode CA12 5XJ). The event uses fell running terrain and tests route choice, navigational skill and stamina in difficult mountain country.

Courses are organized into Classic, Medium and Short options. Typical Classic competitors cover about 25 miles with 8000 feet of ascent and descent. Applicants are vetted for fell running experience because of the severity of the terrain. The event is run under Fell Runners Association Rules.

Entry details include an entry fee of £30.00 with a £1.50 discount for use of a personal SI card, and an Under 23 fee of £5.00 which includes a free loan SI card where required thanks to a bequest. Pre marked waterproof maps are included in the fee. Electronic punching and scoring use the SportIdent system and on the spot results are provided.

Post race food and an informal get together are included in the entry fee. Prizes are awarded across a range of categories. Minimum age is 18 for single runners; over 14s may compete as part of a pair on the Short course if accompanied by a runner aged at least 21.
