The Lakes TrailFest

The Lakes TrailFest takes place in the Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area in Palmer, Alaska. This trail running event utilizes the single-track and grass trails surrounding the local lakes. Participants should be prepared for various terrain features including roots, fallen leaves, and occasional fallen trees. Sections of the course can be wet or slick depending on conditions.

The event offers several race distances to accommodate different experience levels:

  • 1.5 Mile (Kids Run)
  • 5K (3.1 Miles)
  • 10K (6.2 Miles)
  • 25K (15.5 Miles)
  • 50K (31 Miles)

All races start and finish at the campground area of the Matanuska Lakes State Recreation Area. The 50K course consists of two loops of the 25K course. Time limits are in place for the longer distances, with a cutoff of 4 hours to reach the halfway mark for the 50K and a total course limit of 8.5 hours. The 25K has a total time limit of 5 hours.

Support is provided via aid stations, though the number varies by distance. The 25K and 50K courses feature two main aid stations, while the 10K has one. There are no aid stations for the 5K or Kids Run. Participants are expected to carry their own water bottles for refilling at these stations. Runners receive a finisher's mug upon completion, and additional awards are provided for the top three male and female finishers in each category.

Vehicles parking at the event require an Alaska State Parking permit, which can be purchased as an annual pass or via a daily pass at the on-site kiosk. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
