Skeetawk Scramble - Palmer, AK

The Skeetawk Scramble is a three day mountain running weekend organized by Black Wolf Endurance at Skeetawk Ski Area in the Hatcher Pass Recreation Area. The 2026 weekend takes place August 28 to 30 and includes multiple uphill and ridge-based mountain races that start and finish at Skeetawk.

Available race formats include:

  • Vertical Kilometer (VK): ~3 miles, 3,000+ ft ascent.
  • 12K: 12 kilometers, loop course with about 3,600 ft climb and descent.
  • Youth Scramble: 1 kilometer uphill, approximately 1,000 ft gain, ages 14 and under.
  • Skeetawk Skyline Scramble: 37K (~23 miles), technical, about 11,500 ft elevation gain.

Courses use newly developed hiking trails, ridge lines, singletrack, slabs, chunky rock, shale sections, and some asphalt connectors. The Skyline Scramble is described as highly technical and intended for runners experienced with steep mountain terrain; the 12K offers a shorter mountain loop. The Youth Scramble is an uphill-only point-to-point for children 14 and under; parents may run with children aged 8 and under or meet them at the top to assist with descent.

Runners may choose to enter one, two, or all three adult events over the weekend. The Skyline Scramble includes time cutoffs expressed as elapsed-hour limits at several checkpoints to manage pacing and safety. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
