Skeetawk Scramble

The Skeetawk Scramble is a three day mountain running event with all races starting and finishing at Skeetawk Ski Area in the Hatcher Pass Recreation Area near Palmer, AK. The weekend offers multiple individual events and allows runners to enter one, two, or all three events over the weekend.

Event types include:

  • Skeetawk VK vertical route, about 3 miles, 3000+ ft gain
  • Skeetawk 12K, loop course with 3600 ft gain and loss
  • Youth Scramble, 1 kilometer uphill, ~1,000 ft gain, ages 14 and under
  • Skeetawk Skyline Scramble 37K, about 23 miles, 11,500 ft vertical

Course details note steep climbs, exposed ridgelines, and a mix of terrain including rocky slabs, chunky rock, silt packed mud single track, shale descents, gravel and asphalt sections. The 37K route is described as highly technical and intended for runners experienced on steep mountain terrain; it is not recommended as a first mountain race.

Cutoffs for the 37K are given as elapsed-time limits at key checkpoints: Summit Lake 2.5 hours, Top of Marmot 4 hours, Hatcher Pass Lodge 5.5 hours, Finish 8 hours. Age minimums are indicated for each event and parents may run with children aged 8 and under in the youth uphill. Registration closes August 23 at 11:59 PM AK.
