Event Overview

The Derby 50k is a low-key, no-frills running event held in a rural setting near Ellerbe, North Carolina. The event follows a 31.5-mile course consisting of three loops through the countryside. The route features rolling hills and transitions between asphalt and dirt surfaces.

Course and Logistics

The course starts and finishes at the Derby Community Building. Participants run in a counter-clockwise direction on roads that remain open to public vehicle traffic. Participants are responsible for navigating the route by following yellow arrows painted on the highway at turns and certain straight sections.

Food and Community Support

A post-race meal is held at the Derby Community Building, provided by the Jones Springs Church. The meal includes spaghetti with meat or vegetarian sauce, salad, and various desserts such as homemade cakes, banana pudding, and pies. Race numbers serve as the meal ticket for runners, while the general public can purchase plates for a fee. Proceeds from the food service support the local community, including the church and fire department.

Donations and Awards

The event facilitates donations for Richmond County Animal Advocates, and participants are encouraged to bring dog or cat food to an onsite collection van. Regarding awards, recognition is given to the first overall male and female finishers, as well as the first local male and female finishers. Experience a unique 50K event featuring ten consecutive 5K runs starting every hour on a natural surface course. Bring your own supplies and enjoy a social atmosphere with fellow runners during the scheduled breaks between laps.

A 24 hour trail ultramarathon at Hinson Lake in Rockingham NC on a USATF certified 1.5032 mile loop featuring electronic timing, night chem light markings, a 500 runner cap and awards for 24 hour and 100 K finishers.

A USATF-certified *5K* trail run starting at Sandhills Community College and winding through Southern Pines Reservoir Park, featuring race timing, awards, wellness vendors, food trucks, children’s activities, and a dog-friendly atmosphere.

Two ultramarathon distances on October 17-18, 2026 in Uwharrie National Forest using a 20.5 mile figure eight loop. Field is limited to 150 runners and both races have a 36 hour cutoff.
