Fell Running in the Pennines
The Cross Fell Race for GNAAS is a fell running event held in the North Pennines, which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The race is conducted under Fell Runners Association (FRA) rules and serves as a fundraiser for the Great North Air Ambulance Service and a local village hall. The course follows a lasso-style route starting from the village of Garrigill.
Participants navigate a 24 km course that includes 680 m of total ascent. The route reaches the summit of Cross Fell, which is the highest peak in the Pennines, and passes the source of the River Tees. Much of the race utilizes the Pennine Way and established bridle paths.
Due to the nature of the terrain and FRA regulations, all participants must carry specific safety equipment. This includes full body cover with taped seams, a hat, gloves, a map, a compass, and a whistle. A strict cutoff time is enforced at the second checkpoint for safety reasons.
The event facilities and registration are located at the Garrigill village hall. The venue provides changing areas, showers, and toilets. Post-race refreshments are provided to all participants, and prizes are awarded to various age categories and teams of three for men and women.
