Event overview
The Thames Ring Series is a multi-distance trail event based at the Morrell Rooms, Streatley-on-Thames (RG8 9JA). The main route is the Thames Ring 250, an anti-clockwise loop of roughly 250 miles (noted as closer to 256 miles) that follows the Thames, the Grand Union Canal and the Oxford Canal before returning to the start. The route is almost entirely on canal and riverside paths and is described as relatively flat. The 2026 race dates are 22–26 April 2026.
Distances and format
- TR250 - full route, approximately 250 miles, 100-hour cutoff.
- TR150 - section from the start to the Nether Heyford checkpoint.
- TR100 - section from Nether Heyford to the finish, 34-hour cutoff.
Runners navigate using provided maps and .GPX files. Checkpoints are provided at roughly 25-mile intervals. Tracking via GPS trackers is included and trackers have an emergency SOS function.
Logistics, rules and facilities
Facilities include toilets and changing at the start/finish and some checkpoints, indoor sleeping at several indoor checkpoints, and sleeping tents after about 75 miles. Drop-bag rules: TR250 and TR150 runners may use one bag up to 20 kg transported to each checkpoint; TR100 drop bags are accessible only at the Lower Heyford checkpoint. Outside support is allowed only at specified checkpoints; pacers and buddy runners are not permitted. Entrants must be 18 or over. Entry fees range broadly in the materials provided; paid entry includes tracking, medical support, baggage transport and a finishers medal for finishers.
Required kit
Mandatory items to be carried include at least 1 litre of fluids, full waterproof top and bottoms, hat or buff, sufficient food between checkpoints, a charged mobile phone and a head torch (minimum 100 lumens). Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
