Summer Solstice Fell Run

The Summer Solstice Fell Run is part of the Dartmoor Fell Series and takes place in the Merrivale valley at the Dartmoor Inn Merrivale, PL20 6ST, on June 17. The event includes a senior race and combined junior categories.

The senior race for 18 and over is 9.5k. Entries are limited and not transferable. Standard entry fees are shown as £4 to £5, with on-the-day registration allowed if places remain at a cash charge of £10. Online entry is used when the site is open. Age group categories are organised in ten year increments.

Participants are expected to be competent at navigating in all potential Dartmoor weather conditions and to wear adequate clothing. The route is marked in places to protect ground nesting birds and to avoid the firing range. Organisers reserve the right to abandon or shorten the course in bad weather.

Course features include a steep initial rise to Middle Staple Tor, ridge running to Higher Staple and Roos Tor, an undulating section to a marshalled turn toward a stone wall corner and White Tor, a fast descent to a stream ford, a field crossing and a long runnable ascent back to Middle Staple followed by a steep final descent to the finish. Parking is normally in nearby farm fields with a small donation to charity, and facilities include toilets, refreshments and car parking. Competitors are asked to bring their own water bottle.
