Summer Solstice Fell Race, Dartmoor Fell Series

Held on June 17 at the Dartmoor Inn, Merrivale (PL20 6ST), this evening fell race forms part of the Dartmoor Fell Series. The senior event for runners aged 18 and over is 9.5k. Junior races for combined U9/U11 and U13/U15 categories are normally held separately and may be entered on the day.

The route uses the Merrivale valley and nearby tors. The course climbs steeply in the opening mile to Middle Staple Tor, follows a ridge to Higher Staple and Roos Tor, then undulates before a marshalled turn toward a stone wall corner and the climb of White Tor. A fast descent leads to a stream ford, a field crossing and a long runnable ascent back to Middle Staple, finishing after a steep 1 km drop. Runners should take care on the fast descent as route markers can be missed in competitive situations.

Participants are expected to be competent at navigation in all potential Dartmoor weather conditions. The route will be waymarked in places to protect ground nesting birds and avoid the firing range. Organisers may shorten or abandon the course in bad weather. Numbers are limited and entries are not transferable. Entry fees are listed as £4 to £5; if places remain, on the day registration is possible at £10 cash. Toilet facilities, refreshments and car parking are available; parking is often in a local farmer s field for a small donation to charity. Runners are asked to bring their own water bottle.
