Starlight Challenge: Arlington 'Owler
The Starlight Challenge: Arlington 'Owler is a night trail running event held at the National Trust Arlington Court in North Devon. Organized by the Ilfracombe Running Club, the race takes place under dark skies, traversing the fields and woodland trails of the Arlington Estate. The route offers the chance to see local wildlife such as bats, owls, and deer.
Participants can choose between two distance options:
- 6 km: This single loop course features a total ascent of 120 m. The minimum age for participants is 14.
- 12 km: This distance consists of two loops with a total maximum ascent of 240 m. The minimum age for participants is 17.
Due to the nature of the event, specific safety requirements are mandatory for all runners. These include wearing trail shoes and a headtorch with a minimum of 300 lumens and sufficient battery life. For the 12 km race, there is a time limit where runners must complete the first loop within 55 minutes to continue.
The event is held under a Trail Running Association permit and follows UKA rules, which prohibit running with dogs. Race headquarters are situated at the Arlington Court estate, where registration and number collection take place. On-site facilities include car parking and a food and beverage trailer provided by the National Trust. Prizes are awarded to the top three finishers in both distance categories.
