Event

The St Peters Way Ultra is an ultramarathon following the historic St Peter’s Way footpath from Chipping Ongar to the chapel at Bradwell on Sea. The course is approximately 42 miles on trails, footpaths and bridleways with some road and village sections. Entrants must be 18 or over. The listed entry fee for 2026 is £60 and for 2027 is £70.

Course and checkpoints

The route runs through rolling countryside and historic areas and includes muddy trails, fields, rural tracks and a final section on a raised sea wall. The route is waymarked but requires basic navigation; organisers provide downloadable GPX files and there will be trackers and sweepers on the course. There are four checkpoints that offer water, squash, coke and basic food with vegan and vegetarian options; checkpoints will handle nuts. Leg distances are:

  • 7.9 miles - Start to CP1
  • 7.9 miles - CP1 to CP2
  • 9.6 miles - CP2 to CP3
  • 8.6 miles - CP3 to CP4
  • 9.0 miles - CP4 to Finish

Logistics, kit and rules

The start and finish are in remote locations with limited public transport. Pay-and-display parking is available near the start, typically costing £6-£10. A return minibus from the finish to the start can be booked for a fee; the bus cost is non-refundable. Organisers require compulsory kit, including the ability to carry 1 litre of fluids, at least 400 kcal of spare food, waterproof jacket and trousers, spare warm layer, a headtorch (minimum 100 lumens) and a charged mobile phone. Missing compulsory kit may lead to penalties or disqualification. Dogs and pacers are not permitted.
