St Peters Way Ultra

The St Peters Way Ultra follows an historic pilgrimage route across Essex from Chipping Ongar to the Chapel of St Peter on the Wall at Bradwell on Sea. The course is approximately 42 miles and runs mainly on footpaths and bridleways with some village road and pavement sections. The final section includes a raised sea wall and exposed, potentially cold and windy terrain.

The route is waymarked but requires basic navigation. Organisers provide downloadable GPX files and maps and each runner is fitted with a live tracker. Sweepers operate on the course. Underfoot conditions vary from short grass to very sticky mud and the terrain is continually undulating rather than steeply hilly.

There are four staffed checkpoints offering water, squash, coke and a range of sweet and savoury foods including vegan and vegetarian options. Checkpoints handle nuts and nut based products and participants with specific dietary needs are asked to record them on their entry. All checkpoints are outdoors and there are limited indoor facilities along the route. The finish has no toilets.

Runners must be aged 18 or over. The event requires compulsory kit for safety, including capacity for 1 litre of fluids, spare food of at least 400 kcal, waterproof jacket and trousers with taped seams, warm spare layer, a headtorch of minimum 100 lumens, and a charged mobile phone. Kit may be checked and missing items can incur penalties or disqualification. Entry fees are listed per year and entries close two weeks before the race.
