The Spencer Glacier Dash is a train-accessible running event in Portage, Alaska. Registration includes a ticket on the Alaska Railroad to the Spencer Whistle Stop. The course begins at the Spencer Whistle Stop, follows the Spencer Glacier Trail to Spencer Lake, continues to the Spencer Glacier Overlook, then returns to the Chugach Adventures base camp at the boat launch for a total distance of 5 Miles.
The start location is only reachable by the Alaska Railroad. Participants may travel to Spencer the day before and camp overnight or travel to Spencer on race day. The race is capped at 100 participants. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult running with them. The event takes place within U.S. Forest Service permit areas and in bear country.
Gear that cannot be carried on the body, including jogging strollers and camping equipment, may be placed on the cargo train car or left in the Chugach Adventures van or at the Whistle Stop. Participants are asked to bring a personal water container; a refill jug will be available on site and snacks will be provided after the run. Family and friends may travel to the site on regular railroad fares; discounted family ticket options are offered through the event organizer.
