Spencer Glacier Dash
The Spencer Glacier Dash is a trail race held on June 7, 2026 under permit from Chugach National Forest. The course is accessible only by the Alaska Railroad and begins at the Spencer Whistle Stop. Runners follow the Spencer Glacier Trail to Spencer Lake, continue to the Spencer Glacier Overlook, then return to the Chugach Adventures base camp at the boat launch for a roughly 5 Miles out and back course. The organizing group notes the distance may be slightly over or under the approximated five miles due to limited measuring equipment on this remote route.
The event emphasizes the cultural connection to the Alaska Railroad and the changing glacial landscape. KMTA is raising funds to support volunteer trail maintenance across the Chugach National Forest in response to reduced federal staffing for trail upkeep. Participants have the option to travel to Spencer the day before and camp there; cargo train service is available for larger gear.
The Dash is open to participants over age 7, and children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult running with them. The race takes place in bear country; participants are advised to carry bear spray. The event is held in all weather and follows partner operational plans for safety related cancellations. All participants receive one custom swag item included with registration. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
