Spelga Skyline

Spelga Skyline is a mountain running event that follows a circuit of the peaks around Spelga Reservoir in the Mourne Mountains. The event comprises a NIMRA Championship long race and a new shorter course that is part of the NIMRA League.

The long course visits multiple summits along the skyline and is largely off-road, with two mandatory road crossings. The route is not marked and competitors must navigate between checkpoints in the correct order. There is a marshaled checkpoint at Deer's Meadow with a cut-off time of 13:15; runners arriving after that time will be directed off the race route.

Distances and climbs:

  • 20 km (approx 13 miles), ascent 1800 m
  • 11 km, ascent 815 m

Runners must use the designated runners-only car park below the dam and report to race control at the finish. The race is held under Athletics NI and FRA rules and runs with NIMRA permission. A minimum safety kit is mandatory and will be checked before the start; required items include waterproof whole-body cover, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, physical map and compass, and a thermal foil blanket. Use of GPS devices for navigation is not permitted and walking poles are not allowed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
