The South Mountains Marathons half marathon takes place at South Mountains State Park near Connelly Springs, North Carolina on January 10, 2026. The race in 2026 is limited to the half marathon distance because some park trails remain closed. Registration opens August 15 and is limited to 200 entrants per day. Entry fees for the half are $75 until October 16 and $85 after. Refunds of 75% of the entry fee (excluding taxes and fees) are available through October 15; 50% refunds (excluding taxes and fees) are available through December 15. Transfers and deferments are not allowed.

Course and logistics

Distance is 12.9 miles with approximately 2,600 feet of elevation gain and a 4.5 hour time limit. The course uses about 12.4 miles of trail and about 0.5 miles of pavement. It includes two creek crossings and one full aid station. Full aid station supplies include at minimum water, Gatorade, assorted soft drinks, and foods such as bananas, potato chips, pretzels, cookies, candies, Goldfish, trail mix, and PB&J. If inclement weather forces a postponement, the backup date is January 24; if the event must be canceled and rescheduled dates are not available, the event may be run virtually on the actual course on January 25 or 26.
