SMR Mayapple Trail Runs
The Mayapple Trail Runs are organized by the South Mountain Conservancy with support from the Essex County Parks Department and take place in South Mountain Reservation in Millburn, New Jersey on Saturday, May 16, 2026. Races are timed with a chip system and proceeds support trail maintenance and park stewardship.
Distances offered include:
- 5 miles
- 10 miles
- 20 miles
- 50 kilometers (31 miles)
- 50 miles
- 1.15 mile Kids Race for ages 5 to 12
All multi-loop distances use two forested circuits: an East Loop of about 10.5 miles and a West Loop of about 10.2 miles. The east and west loops together total roughly 1,500 feet of ascent. The separate 5-mile loop has about 700 feet of ascent. Terrain includes long stretches of gravel roads, technical single track with roots and rocks, several paved sections on the east loop, and a water crossing. Aid stations are placed at roughly five mile intervals and offer water, electrolyte drinks and light snacks.
Runners may drop to a lesser distance during the race and still be counted in standings for medals when they began on the same start. Parking at the Locust Grove start is limited; additional free weekend parking is available across Glen Avenue in nearby lots. Volunteer roles are used to staff aid stations and course support, and group discount and volunteer benefit programs are offered. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
