The Squatchy Surprise

The Squatchy Surprise is a trail event on July 25, 2026, held at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey, with the site listed as 62 Cherry Lane. The organizer offers timed options and a community-oriented trail format that uses a random-draw mechanic to determine each loop.

Participants draw colored golf balls from a bucket before each loop to learn which of four marked loops they will run or hike. A black golf ball allows the participant to choose a loop. Volunteers track completed loops on a chart, and runners must keep their bib visible. The draw-and-run process repeats until 6:00 PM. At that time participants choose either to continue drawing balls or to wait until 6:30 PM when a 1/2 mile mini loop opens; any loop not finished before the timer ends does not count toward final mileage. A single charity mulligan is available for a cash donation, with proceeds directed to the event charity partner.

The event partners with Bigger Than The Trail, which uses trail running to support mental health. Aid stations will offer Skratch Hydration and a variety of prepackaged items and hot food. Youth programming includes discounts, wooden star medallions for young attendees, and family activities. The organizer does not offer refunds but provides deferral options under stated conditions.
