The Squatchy Surprise
West Orange, United States • 25 Jul 2026
Event
The Squatchy Surprise takes place on July 25, 2026 at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey. The start and finish are at the Tulip Springs Picnic Area (62 Cherry Lane). The event offers 12-hour, 6-hour and 3-hour formats and is capped at 250 participants. The event partners with Bigger Than The Trail, a 501(c)(3) organization that uses trail running to support mental health.
Course and format
The course system uses four distinct trail loops. Before each loop, participants draw a colored golf ball from a bucket to determine which loop they must run or hike. A black golf ball allows the participant to choose their loop. Volunteers track completed loops with stickers; participants must keep their bib visible. At a designated point in the evening, participants choose to continue drawing golf balls or switch to a mini 0.5 mile loop; choosing one option excludes the other. Any loop not completed before the event timer ends does not count toward final mileage. One optional "Charity-Mulligan" re-draw is available for a cash donation; proceeds go to the event charity.
Terrain, aid and rules
The trails include a mix of hard-packed carriage trails and technical singletrack with rocks and roots. Squatch HQ at the start/finish is the sole aid station and provides hydration (including Skratch), beverages, fruit, snacks and hot food options with gluten-free and vegan choices available upon request. A first aid kit and AED are on site. Portajohns, private changing tents and a quiet tent are available. Pacers are allowed for participants over 60 and athletes with disabilities; crew access is restricted to the start/finish area. Dogs are not permitted.
Registration and policies
The event does not offer refunds. Deferral options and hardship entries are available under specified conditions. Deferral rules include a partial credit for cancellations more than 21 days before the event and volunteer-based deferrals for late injury withdrawals.
