Interstate 17

Interstate 17 is a trail event based at State Line Lookout in Closter, NJ. The route runs along viewpoints of the Hudson River into New York and back and covers a total distance of seventeen miles with over 5000 ft of elevation change. The event was founded in 2017.

The format begins with a one mile out-and-back on a closed road to separate the field for safety, followed by four laps on a roughly four mile loop of rugged, technical trails. Participants complete three laps counterclockwise and a final lap clockwise. Runners must check in at the start and finish of each loop so a time card can be punched.

The course alternates rock strewn dirt trails, long steep descents on rocky stairs and switchbacks, boulder scrambles that may require using hands, singletrack sections along the river shore, a waterfall and a steep ascent via switchbacks and staircases. Some sections have severe exposure and the organizer warns that falls can cause serious injury or death. There are no awards or medals and the event is run at participants own risk.

Aid stations are located at miles 1, 5, 9 and 13 and are described as fully stocked with water, sports drink, soda and snacks. Personal supply stashes are permitted and accessible each loop. Carrying personal hydration is recommended. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
