Interstate 17 Trail Run
The Interstate 17 Trail Run is a 17 mile trail race at State Line Lookout in Closter, NJ, held on 08/14/2027. The course was founded in 2017 and covers significant terrain with over 5000 ft of elevation change. Organizers state there are locations on the trail where falls can cause death or serious injury; participants are warned that the race carries substantial risk. No awards or medals are provided.
The route begins with a one mile out-and-back on a closed road to separate the field, followed by a four mile loop of rugged technical trails that is run four times. Runners complete three loops counterclockwise and a final loop clockwise. Competitors must check in at the start/end of each loop to have a time card punched.
Trail features are described by mile sections and include semi technical rock strewn dirt trails, steep descents with jagged stairs and switchbacks, boulder filled scrambles that require use of hands, singletrack dirt sections, and a rocky shore with a waterfall leading to a cliff ascent. The final loop reverses the initial loop.
Aid stations are located at miles 1, 5, 9, and 13 and are listed as fully stocked with water, sports drink, soda, candies, oranges, chips, pretzels and more. The course notes recommend carrying personal hydration because some sections may require both hands. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
