Shale Trail Run (West Lothian)

The Shale Trail Run offers multiple race options along the West Lothian Shale Trail between Winchburgh and West Calder, passing Broxburn and the Almond Valley area. The event supports the charity Smalls for All, with a donation from any surplus and an option to donate on entry.

Available distances

  • 50K Race with GPS tracking and checkpoints about every 8 km.
  • 25K Race following the Shale Trail between West Calder and Winchburgh.
  • 9K Race along a shorter section of the Shale Trail.
  • 3 x 8K Relay covering the full route in three legs.

Key race details include age limits for each distance, baggage or drop bag services on some races, and compulsory kit recommendations for cold or wet conditions such as head covering, waterproof jacket, space blanket, mobile phone, food and drink. Trail shoes are recommended. The course is point to point, well marked, and supported by marshals and a tail runner. Dogs and pushchairs are not allowed. An eight hour cut off applies to the 50K.

Alva Games is the British Championship hill race at Alva near Stirling on 11 July 2026. The course is about 2.5 km with 365 meters of climb and it counts as a BOFRA Championship counter.

A chip-timed 5k, 10k and half marathon at Holyrood Park in Edinburgh with a measured course, hydration stations, marshals and a finisher's medal. Age guidance applies and dogs are not permitted.

Trail runs at Callendar House in Falkirk offer three distances, live chip timing and Canicross access. Finishers receive a medal, event merchandise and a snack and drink.

A traditional hill race near Flotterstone in the Pentland Hills with a senior 5.2 km course and a shorter junior 2.2 km option, featuring steep summit climbs and marshalled routes where hill shoes and basic kit are advised.
