The event began in December 2013 as an informal "Fat Ass" at White Ranch Open Space in Golden, CO, was incorporated as an official trail race in 2017, and moved to Staunton State Park in 2021. Registration for 2026 opens October 1, 2026; capacity has been increased from 200 to 250 entrants.
Staunton State Park spans varied terrain and elevations, from roughly 8,100 feet to over 10,000 feet, including meadows, granite cliffs, and diverse plant and wildlife communities. The race takes place at approximately 8,000 feet and higher, and weather can vary widely; temperatures and conditions have ranged from below zero to the 60s and from dry trails to significant snowfall. Traction devices and snowshoes are permitted under specified conditions.
On-course support and event provisions include well stocked aid stations, a gender specific race shirt, and a finisher's medal. Parking inside the park is limited; most participants use a park-and-ride about 10 minutes away with shuttle service. Spectators are discouraged and restricted to the start/finish area after 9am; crews and pacers are not allowed. Drop bags are allowed only at the start/finish area. Awards include unique finisher awards and several event-specific recognitions; there are no podium or age group awards and no mailed awards.
