San Juan Solstice 50 Mile, Lake City, Colorado
The San Juan Solstice is a 50 mile mountain trail run held in Lake City, Colorado. The event is organized as a benefit for Lake City EMTs and is staged in high alpine terrain around the Continental Divide.
The course travels through high mountain terrain that has included snowfields, steep sections and creek crossings in Alpine Gulch. Past editions have reported difficult creek crossings and cold, wet conditions that increased risk of hypothermia; lightning has also been a historical concern on divide sections.
The event began in 1995 as the Lake City 50 and was renamed and turned over to the Lake City community in 2002, moving to the vicinity of the summer solstice. Organizers typically make course decisions based on snow and creek conditions. For 2026 the race date is June 20, 2026.
Entry in recent years has been limited by lottery; the lottery closed with 300 runners and 285 on the waitlist and registration closed January 31, 2026.
Participants must be at least 18 years old and must have completed a prior trail ultra. Runners should have substantial high mountain experience and be comfortable in alpine settings. Live tracking via MAProgress is required; every runner must carry a registered tracker, which may be personal, borrowed, or rented. Those renting trackers receive printed instructions at Friday check in. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
