Event overview

The Sneffels Round is an endurance mountaineering challenge in Ouray, Colorado, starting September 5, 2026. The event has a 100 hour time limit. The course map shows 39 peaks; depending on chosen electives, a full finish can be earned with as few as 34 or 35 peaks. The peaks include many 13ers and one 14er, Mount Sneffels. Most peaks are Class 2, two required peaks are Class 3, and several elective peaks have higher technical difficulty. One example route is about 75 miles with 43,000 feet of vertical gain and is roughly 70% off-trail.

Course and rules

Participants must provide a brief summary of previous mountaineering, routefinding, and endurance experience and hold club membership; applicants are waitlisted until qualifications and membership are reviewed. Field limits apply: a maximum of five uncrewed and 15 crewed individuals or teams, with a total cap of 35 runners on run day. Staggered starts are used and participants are expected to travel independently.

Control points are mandatory but may be visited in any order. Elective controls carry point values; a full finish requires elective controls totaling six points in addition to non-elective controls. Ptarmigan Overlook will be an unstaffed control point in 2025 and must be visited twice. Teams may have up to three members and must carry a tracker with messaging capability. Crews are limited to designated checkpoints, legal vehicle access points, or specified hike-in crew routes. No pacers, no caches, and participants may not travel by vehicle while moving on course. Trekking poles, ice axes, and traction devices are allowed; skis, packrafts, and wingsuits are not. GPS use is allowed. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
