Saguaro Showdown : event overview

Saguaro Showdown is a backyard ultra held at Usery Mountain Regional Park in Mesa, AZ. The event runs separate races for runners and ruckers that follow a repeating loop format. Each loop must be completed within one hour, and a new loop begins every hour on the hour. The event continues until only one runner and one rucker remain; the final participant must complete one more loop alone to be declared the winner for that division.

Distances per loop:

  • 4.1667 mile loop (runners)
  • 2.3 mile loop (ruckers)

Runners and ruckers may enter only one division. Participants must be standing in the start corral when the next loop begins; late starts are not allowed. Once the start bell sounds, participants may not receive outside aid or leave the course except to use portable toilets. Crews are permitted but not required; participants must provide their own aid supplies. Space near the start and finish is available for a chair, cooler, and small personal gear, and overnight presence at that area is permitted.

At night the course moves to an out and back road alignment and then returns to the trail loop the next morning. Portable toilets will be located just after the start line. Ruckers must meet a core weight requirement based on body weight, and organizers offer a fundraising option that can waive the registration fee if the minimum is raised. The event provides an event T-shirt and an additional acknowledgment item; winners receive an award. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
