Chupacabra Trail Race

The Chupacabra Trail Race takes place on August 22, 2026 at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, AL. It is the fourth race in the Wild Thangs Trail Series, a summer series of four trail events held from June through August.

Distances offered

  • 10K
  • Half marathon

Courses include spectator friendly sections with bluff views, mountain scenery, creek crossings and waterfalls. Several aid stations are located on course and provide water, Gatorade, coke, pretzels, M&M's, granola bars and other items. The event follows a cupless policy so runners must use a handheld bottle, pack or reusable cup; a reusable cup is available for purchase at checkout.

The race is capped at 400 runners. All entrants in the Chupacabra 10K and Half Marathon receive a short sleeve tri-blend shirt and a finisher award; the shirt is the same design used for the entire series. Packet pickup is available at RunningLane on the Friday before each race and may also be available the morning of the race. Age groups are 0-10, 11-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 plus.

Organizers state there are very loose cutoffs overall, with a 17 minute per mile cutoff for Long Series participants and a suggestion that the Short Series may suit those unable to maintain 15 minute miles. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
