Roman River Trails
The Roman River Trails is a trail running event based at the Bannatyne Gym and Spa in Layer De La Haye, near Colchester. The event features two distinct distances focused on the Roman River valley and surrounding villages.
The available distances for this event are:
- Marathon
- Half Marathon
Participants follow self navigation routes using either a .gpx file or written instructions provided by the organizers. The terrain consists primarily of hard-packed trails, supplemented by sections of tarmac and grass footpaths. The marathon course crosses the Roman River multiple times and includes several hills due to the geography of the river valley. The Half Marathon follows a loop through the villages to the west of Colchester.
This is a cupless event, meaning runners must carry their own hydration vessels. Fully stocked aid stations are positioned at approximately 10 km intervals, offering water, squash, flat cola, and various sweet and savory snacks such as biscuits, chocolate, fruit, and pretzels.
The event has specific time limits for completion. The Half Marathon has a cut-off of 3.5 hours, while the Marathon has a cut-off of 7 hours. Facilities including toilets are located at the race headquarters at Kingsford Park. Every finisher receives a goody bag, and finishers who select the option during registration also receive a bespoke medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
