Roanoke Valley Weighted Race
The Roanoke Valley Weighted Race is a timed endurance event that introduces a scoring system based on both distance and weight carried. Participants compete over a span of 6 hours on a 2.5 mile out-and-back course. The route follows the Roanoke River Greenway, stretching from River’s Edge North to Piedmont Park.
Individual scores are calculated in pound-miles, referred to as "Kz." To determine this score, the weight a participant carries is multiplied by the distance of the lap completed. At the start of each lap, runners decide the amount of weight they wish to carry. This weight can be adjusted between laps or kept the same. Options for carrying the weight include rucksacks, backpacks, weighted vests, sandbags, or hydration bladders. All equipment is weighed at the event.
The event structure allows participants to customize their strategy by choosing between carrying heavier loads at a slower pace or lighter loads at a faster pace. To receive credit for a lap, the distance must be completed before the total event time expires.
The event features:
- 6 Hour timed format
Recognition is provided for overall winners and age groups. Participants can also earn awards for reaching specific Kz milestones. The start, finish, and parking areas are located at River’s Edge North Park. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
