Red Cedar Trail Races at Giant City State Park
The Red Cedar Trail Races take place in Makanda, Illinois, within the Shawnee National Forest. This event primarily utilizes the Red Cedar Trail, offering a variety of terrain including single track, gravel road connectors, horse trails, fields, and a small section of paved road. Participants should prepare for technical trail sections and potential creek crossings depending on recent rainfall.
The event features three distinct distances:
- 40k: A two-loop course for participants aged 18 and older.
- 1/2 Marathon: A single-loop "heavy" half-marathon with over 1,800 feet of elevation gain, open to participants aged 13 and older.
- 5k: Known as the "Taste of Red Cedar," this route follows a service road for some time before connecting to the main trail.
All races start and finish at Pavilion 5. The course is well marked with ribbons, arrows, and directional signs at intersections. As these are open trails, runners may encounter hikers or horseback riders.
The event is managed as a cupless race, meaning no cups are provided at stations. There are two stocked aid stations and two hydration stations per loop for the longer distances, while the 5k includes one hydration station near the two-mile mark. Participants receive a swag bag and post-race refreshments. Finisher medals are awarded to those completing the 40k and half-marathon distances.
Lodging is available nearby at the Giant City Lodge, which offers cabins approximately a quarter mile from the start. The park also provides electric and primitive camping options. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
