The course is very hilly and uses single-track trails and dirt roads through foothill terrain. The preserve features creeks, old oak trees that provide intermittent shade, and panoramic views of the surrounding Santa Cruz Mountains and Bay Area. Several routes use loop and out-and-back formats with colored ribbons marking most sections; some short sections have no ribbons and will be signed at trailheads.

Two primary aid stations are listed at Rancho Cañada del Oro and Bald Peaks / Needlegrass, with additional water stops at several trail intersections. Participants are strongly encouraged to carry at least one, preferably two, water bottles or a hydration pack. Cutoff time limits range from 1 hour for the 5K up to 9 hours for the 50K; cutoffs are enforced on course sections.

Wildlife caution notes the presence of rattlesnakes. Toilet facilities are limited to a single commode at the main parking area with additional public toilets a short drive away. Parking is extremely restricted and carpooling is advised. Race day registration and mailed registration options are available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
