Mt. Madonna Challenge

The Mt. Madonna Challenge is a trail running event held on Aug. 8, 2026 near Gilroy, California. The courses run among towering redwood trees and climb to peaks that offer views of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Sand Benito County. The race takes place at the Sprig Day Use Area on Blackhawk Canyon Road in Gilroy. Parking is free but very limited, and carpooling is strongly encouraged.

Distances offered:

  • 5K - 843 feet elevation gain; course described as steep.
  • 10K - 1,532 feet elevation gain; course described as steep.
  • Half marathon - 2,828 feet elevation gain; course described as steep.

The event is organized by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports the Mt. Madonna Scholarships. Race fees fund scholarships that have enabled local student-athletes to attend the Max King Trail Running Camp since 2022. The organization also runs a free youth summer running program in Gilroy for 2026.

Volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to help with setup, parking, check-in, aid stations, course marshaling, post-race food, and clean-up. Trail runs nearby

Trail races on July 11, 2026 in Santa Cruz at Harvey West Park, with distances from a 0.25 mile kids run to 50K. The course runs through Coastal Redwoods, meadows and stream canyons and crosses the San Lorenzo River.

Trail running at Calero County Park with multiple distances across single track and dirt paths, significant climbs, aid stations and free parking at the park.

Trail races on hilly mixed dirt and single track at Almaden Quicksilver Park with distances from 5K to 50K, aid stations, drop bag service for longer races, and mandatory course markings and cutoffs.

A community run in Felton that includes a 10K through Henry Cowell Redwoods and a 1 mile kids race, with entry fees covering a pancake breakfast and proceeds supporting local community events.
