Trail Running in Gilroy

The Mt. Madonna Challenge is a trail running event located at the Sprig Day Use Area on Blackhawk Canyon Road in Gilroy, California. The course takes participants through groves of redwood trees and reaches mountain peaks that provide views of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and San Benito County.

The event offers three distinct trail distances:

  • 5K with 843 feet of elevation gain.
  • 10K with 1,532 feet of elevation gain.
  • Half Marathon with 2,828 feet of elevation gain.

Runners navigate a terrain characterized by significant elevation changes. Parking at the venue is available at no cost, though space is limited, and carpooling is suggested by the organizers.

The race operates as a non-profit event. Proceeds from registration fees are used to fund scholarships for local student-athletes to attend the Max King Trail Running Camp. These scholarships aim to support young runners, particularly those from low socioeconomic backgrounds, by providing them with opportunities to participate in running camps at various locations such as Mt. Shasta and the Redwood National Forest. Volunteer opportunities are available for tasks including aid station management, course marshaling, and post-race activities.
