Mount Madonna Challenge - August 8, 2026
The Mount Madonna Challenge is a trail race held at the Sprig Lake Day Use Area in Gilroy, California. Routes run through redwood forest and ascend to ridgelines that provide extended views; courses include substantial elevation gain.
Distances offered:
- 5K: 843 feet elevation gain
- 10K: 1,532 feet elevation gain
- Half Marathon: 2,828 feet elevation gain
The event operates as a nonprofit fundraiser. Proceeds support the Mt. Madonna Scholarship program, which sponsors local high school cross country and track athletes to attend the Max King Trail Running Camp. The race will be cupless to reduce disposable waste and provides reusable race drinking solutions through a partner.
Parking at Sprig Lake is free but very limited; a shuttle runs from an offsite location to the main parking area. Volunteers support many race duties, including aid stations and course marshaling. Chip timing is used for official results. A cut-off policy is enforced on the half marathon for participant safety; runners asked to leave the main course will be directed to an alternate descent. No race day registration is available and entry fees are nonrefundable. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
