Mt. Madonna Challenge
The Mt. Madonna Challenge is a trail running event held on Aug. 8, 2026 near Gilroy, California. The courses run among towering redwood trees and climb to peaks that offer views of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Sand Benito County. The race takes place at the Sprig Day Use Area on Blackhawk Canyon Road in Gilroy. Parking is free but very limited, and carpooling is strongly encouraged.
Distances offered:
- 5K - 843 feet elevation gain; course described as steep.
- 10K - 1,532 feet elevation gain; course described as steep.
- Half marathon - 2,828 feet elevation gain; course described as steep.
The event is organized by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports the Mt. Madonna Scholarships. Race fees fund scholarships that have enabled local student-athletes to attend the Max King Trail Running Camp since 2022. The organization also runs a free youth summer running program in Gilroy for 2026.
Volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to help with setup, parking, check-in, aid stations, course marshaling, post-race food, and clean-up.
