Race for the Underdogs - 5K at Lake Padden

Race for the Underdogs is a 5K event on August 16, 2026 at Lake Padden in Bellingham, Washington. The course is one counterclockwise lap around the lake on grass and trails and begins by the picnic shelter at the east entrance. The route is mainly flat and more than half is wooded; it includes one brief steep upgrade and three rolling hills located on the southwest side of the lake. The event follows the Primary Trail loop excluding Padden Gorge.

The event is organized by Happy Tails Happy Homes, a nonprofit at-home foster program that operates without shelters, offices, or paid staff. Donations to the organization go directly to animals. The group focuses on animals with medical or behavioral challenges that require additional care and a second chance.

Access to the venue is described from I-5. From I-5 northbound use the N. Lake Samish Exit 246 then follow local roads to the East Lake Padden entrance. From I-5 southbound use the Samish Way Exit 252, cross over I-5 and follow Samish Way to the East Lake Padden sign, then follow local roads and event signage to the playground area.

Registration information notes that pre-registration is strongly encouraged, registration closes on August 15 at 11:59 AM PT, and limited race day registration is available for a fee of $50. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
