Moran Constitutional Relay
The Moran Constitutional Relay is a 70-mile, 12-leg trail relay held on the trails of Moran State Park on Orcas Island. Teams of two to six runners share the course, which is run in two stages with the first eight legs on Saturday and the final four legs on Sunday. The route passes lowland forests, moss-covered rocky balds, lakeshores, streams, wetlands, and the summit of 2399-foot Mount Constitution with wide views. Historic park buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps are along portions of the route.
Legs vary in length and profile, and the course mix is intended to provide variety. Most trails are well-groomed and runnable, though a few sections are moderately technical; steeper descents increase the technical challenge. Distances for individual legs range from three to nine miles, and each team member must complete at least two legs. Teams may assign legs among members in any pattern, including consecutive legs.
Registration is by team and limited to the first 50 teams; a waiting list is used when the field is full. Entry includes an event t-shirt, specified meals during the weekend, and finisher medals for teams that complete the full course. Each team must provide a volunteer or pay an alternate volunteer fee. Onsite lodging options include cabins (sold out for 2026) and camp sites; parking near the event center is limited and cellular coverage in the park can be spotty.
