The Reach Inc. Race for Independence is held on July 4 in Bozeman, Montana. The event offers in-person and virtual options with the following distances:

Registration opens March 4, 2026. Entry fees listed in the event information are $30 for the 10K and 5K, and $20 for the 1K. Virtual entries are listed at the same prices, with 500 spots noted for each virtual distance.

Course and logistics

The in-person course runs on north Bozeman trails starting at the Reach Work Center. The trail surface is described as hard packed with a few gentle hills and a total elevation change of 40 feet. The route passes wetland areas and offers mountain views. A route map is available from the organizer and may change based on trail conditions or construction.

Packet pick-up is available the day before and the morning of the race at the Reach Work Center. Short-sleeved t-shirts are available for $15 on a first-come, first-served basis. Medals will be awarded at the live race to top finishers in each event and age bracket. Bottled water and pre-packaged snacks will be provided. No pets are allowed. Tackle the Devil's Backbone near Bozeman on exposed alpine ridgelines and technical high country with serious elevation gain. 25 mile and 50 mile options support local trail charities by donation.

The John Colter Run is a rugged 7 mile course at Missouri Headwaters State Park with muddy trails and waist deep river crossings that test adventurous runners. Limited to 300, it ends with awards, a barbecue, beer and live music.
