Old Gabe Ultra Trail Race

The Old Gabe 50K/30K is an ultra-trail event held in the Gallatin Valley near Bozeman, Montana. The race is named after Jim Bridger and takes place on mountain trails. The course is designed with significant elevation changes, and very few sections of the route are flat.

Distances and Course Detail

The event offers two main distances:

  • 55 km (Standardly referred to as the 50K): This distance features approximately 11,000 to 11,500 feet of total vertical gain. The course follows an M-shape out-and-back format consisting of four significant climbs on 100% trails.
  • 30 km: This distance is approximately 20 miles long. It consists of one leg from the start to the Truman Trailhead and back.

Logistics and Support

The event starts and finishes at the Middle Cottonwood Trailhead. Participants should prepare for a self-supported style run. Aid stations are located at trailheads and provide minimal supplies such as water, gels, electrolytes, and snacks. Drop bag services are available, with delivery to the Truman and Sypes trailheads.

Participants may encounter varied terrain and weather conditions, including potential snow and mud in high-elevation canyons like Bostwick Canyon. There is a total time limit of 12 hours for the 55K, with specific intermediate cut-off times at the Sypes and Middle Cottonwood aid stations. All finishers receive a hat, and special awards are provided for the first-place male and female finishers in the 55K category. Registration for the event is capped at 130 participants.
