The Devil's Backbone is a trail ultramarathon held in the Gallatin National Forest near Bozeman, Montana, on traditional territory of the Apsaaloké, Tsėhéstáno and Niitsitapi peoples. The event uses a single 50-mile course that traverses high mountain ridges and valleys with elevations reaching over 10,000 feet and views of the Gallatin and Bridger ranges. Both solo runners and relay teams may enter.

The course is single-track and technical, with steep climbs, rocky descents, and high-elevation sections. Total elevation gain exceeds 10,000 feet. Aid stations are limited and spaced roughly 24 miles apart at start/finish or turnaround points; they offer water, electrolytes, and light snacks. Runners are required to carry mandatory gear such as water, a GPS or map, a first aid kit, and extra layers. Checkpoint cut-off times apply. Weather can vary widely at high altitude, including sun, rain, strong winds, or snow. The event is free under a U.S. Forest Service permit but a $90 donation per individual or per relay team is encouraged; donations can be given in cash or check at the pre-race meeting or via Venmo.
