Event Overview
The Devil's Backbone is a mountain running event along the Gallatin Crest in the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness near Bozeman, Montana. It offers two route options.
Distances
- 25-Miler: A point-to-point route from Portal Creek Trailhead to Grotto Falls Trailhead, going over Hyalite Peak.
- 50-Miler: An out-and-back route starting and finishing at Grotto Falls Trailhead, with a turnaround at Portal Creek. This route summits Hyalite Peak in both directions.
Course & Environment
The course is described as remote and rugged, following a demanding route with significant elevation gain and technical terrain. It traverses alpine ridgelines with views of the Gallatin Range. The environment is exposed, with the potential for fast-changing weather conditions.
Participation & Logistics
The event is designed for experienced backcountry athletes and emphasizes personal responsibility, self-sufficiency, and respect for the terrain. Participants are expected to carry essential supplies, including food, hydration, navigation tools, and emergency gear.
It is structured as a free community event, with a recommended donation. Donations are distributed to local non-profits supporting trails and public lands.
