Devil's Backbone - July 11, 2026

The Devil's Backbone is a mountain running event near Bozeman, MT, on the Gallatin Crest within the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness. It offers two distance options that traverse alpine ridgelines and exposed high country.

Participants follow a route with significant elevation gain, technical terrain, and limited support. The course is exposed and can experience fast-changing weather, so runners are expected to carry essential supplies such as food, hydration, navigation tools, and emergency gear. The event emphasizes personal responsibility and respect for the terrain.

Distances:

  • 25-Miler: point-to-point Portal Creek Trailhead to Grotto Falls via Hyalite Peak.
  • 50-Miler: out-and-back from Grotto Falls Trailhead with turnaround at Portal Creek; includes summiting Hyalite Peak both directions and may include miles in the dark.

The event is organized as a free community effort and asks participants for a recommended donation. Recommended amounts are $90 for the 25-Miler and $150 for the 50-Miler. A non-refundable deposit equal to 50% of the recommended donation is collected at registration, with the remainder requested before the event weekend. All donations are divided equally and distributed to local nonprofits that support trails, public lands, and the outdoor community.

Volunteering is supported by the organizers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
