Devil's Backbone
The Devil's Backbone is a mountain running event on Saturday, July 11, 2026, near Bozeman, MT in the Gallatin Mountain Range. The event offers long trail routes that traverse alpine ridgelines within the Hyalite–Porcupine–Buffalo Horn Wilderness and on nearby trailheads.
The course runs through remote, rugged terrain with significant elevation gain and technical sections. Much of the route is exposed and can experience fast changing mountain weather. Support on course is limited, so participants are expected to be self-sufficient and competent in backcountry navigation and safety. Runners should carry food, hydration, navigation tools, and emergency gear.
Route options include:
- 25-Miler - Point to point via Portal Creek Trailhead to Grotto Falls Trailhead.
- 50-Miler - Out and back from Grotto Falls Trailhead with turnaround at Portal Creek.
Registration information is provided by the organizer. Event sign up opens on 2026-01-05 and registration closes on Tue, Jun 30 at 11:59 PM MT. The event is presented as a free community event that requests donations; recommended donation amounts are listed for each distance. A non refundable deposit equal to 50% of the recommended donation is required at registration. All donations are distributed to local nonprofit organizations that support trails and public lands.
