Pennine Barrier Ultra 50
The Pennine Barrier Ultra 50 is a single-stage ultra-marathon covering a distance of 50 miles with approximately 2593m of total ascent. The event is set within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, starting and finishing in the village of Malham. The course follows well-defined, way-marked trails including the Pennine Way and the Yorkshire 3 Peaks route.
The route passes through several landmarks such as Malham Cove, the Dry Valley of Watlowes, Malham Tarn, and Janet’s Foss. Participants also summit the three peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough. The event has a strict overall cut-off time of 18 hours.
There are five intermediate checkpoints located along the course:
- 12 miles: Silverdale Road
- 21 miles: Ribblehead Viaduct
- 27 miles: Philpin Farm
- 34 miles: Horton in Ribblesdale
- 38 miles: Silverdale Road
To participate, runners must be at least 20 years old and have successfully completed at least one organized marathon-distance event prior to race day. The race is licensed by the Trail Running Association and held under UK Athletics Rules. Participants are required to carry mandatory kit at all times, including a waterproof coat with sealed seams, a base layer, one liter of water, an emergency blanket, a headtorch, and emergency rations. Every runner is also issued a GPS tracker for the duration of the event.
Access for support crews is restricted at certain locations due to parking limitations and landowner requirements. No drop bags, pacers, or support runners are permitted. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
