Trail Running in the Brecon Beacons
The Pen Y Fan Challenge is a mountain running event located in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. The race starts at the Storey Arms and takes participants to the summit of Pen Y Fan, which is the highest peak in the region. The course features steep climbs, rocky trails, and significant elevation changes.
Participants can choose between two distinct distances:
- 5 miles: This route includes an elevation gain of 1765 feet.
- 13 miles: This longer route features an elevation gain of 4097 feet (1248 meters).
The event uses clear route marking and has marshals positioned along the course. Due to the mountain environment and the potential for wild weather, the organizer mandates specific compulsory equipment for all runners.
For the 5 mile distance, runners must carry a mobile phone, at least 500ml of hydration, a foil blanket or bivi bag, snacks, a basic first aid kit, a whistle, and a windproof jacket.
Those participating in the 13 mile race are required to carry a mobile phone, 2 liters of hydration, a foil blanket or bivi bag, snacks, a basic first aid kit, a whistle, a hat or buff, gloves, and waterproof jacket and trousers. Registration takes place on the morning of the event at the starting location. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
