Course and logistics

The route is entirely on NOC property and uses the Flint Ridge singletrack trail, packed gravel sections, and a short section of pavement. The start and finish are next to the Big Wesser at the Nantahala Outdoor Campus. Runners were to follow State Road 1180 and the Flint Ridge trail, pass the NOC zipline towers, reach a turnaround near mile 3, then return and use a short stint on the Appalachian Trail before finishing. The course has approximately 1,050 ft of elevation gain, with over 1,000 ft of gain in the first 3 miles.
