Beat the Bounds, Patterdale

Beat the Bounds is a traditional parish boundary event in the Ullswater Valley that follows the Patterdale parish boundary. The event offers running and walking options on high level terrain around well known fells and passes. It has been organised as a local tradition for about 45 years and raises funds for Patterdale C of E Primary School and St Patrick's Church.

Distances offered:

  • Full Boundary: 28 miles and 10,200 ft ascent
  • 1st Half: 16 miles and 6,500 ft ascent
  • 2nd Half: 14 miles and 3,500 ft ascent
  • Family Walk or Minibeat: 6 miles downhill via Hartsop Hall

Entry fees include a tracker fitted to the pack, a bespoke race number, Kirkstone checkpoint food and drinks, and finishers soup and cake. A checkpoint at Kirkstone Pass is staffed with snacks and supplied nutrition. Maps will be available to purchase in advance and GPX routes will be provided before the event. Public transport between Patterdale and Kirkstone Pass is available for some starts. Cut off points are applied at Kirkstone Pass and Boredale Hause for safety. There is a no refund policy; unpaid entries that cannot attend are treated as a donation split between the school and the church. Discounts are available for Patterdale parish residents and for Long Distance Walking Association members on the full boundary entry.
