Langdale Gala Fell Race

The Langdale Gala Fell Race is a traditional fell running event held at the New Dungeon Ghyll Gala Field. The event features both junior and senior categories on a course characterized by rough Lakeland fell terrain and steep, loose ground.

The senior race covers a distance of approximately 2.3 km (1.4 miles) with a total ascent of 300 m (980 ft). The route starts from the Gala Field near the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, passes behind Stickle Barn, and proceeds with a steep climb alongside Dungeon Ghyll. Runners follow a rough fell path to a turnaround point at Mark Gate. The final 30 meters of this climb consist of a technical section involving both up and down movement. Participants return to the finish line in the Gala Field using the same route.

The available categories include:

  • Senior race (Under 19's age category and over)
  • Junior races

All races are conducted under Fell Running Association (FRA) rules. The courses are fully flagged and partially marshalled. Competitors are required to bring and be prepared to carry waterproof full body cover, a hat, and gloves. Selection of winners includes trophies and prizes for the first three male and female finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
