Darren Holloway Memorial Race (Buttermere Horseshoe)

Loweswater, United Kingdom • 4 Jul 2026

The Buttermere Horseshoe

The Buttermere Horseshoe is a fell race run around the quiet Buttermere fells and based on the original Buttermere Horseshoe route. The event is held as a memorial race and is organised by a local fell running club.

The route is flagged to the fells at Lanthwaite Green, after which there is significant route choice between checkpoints on the tops. Descent from Mellbreak must use the col between the North and South summits; the route off the North summit is out of bounds. The route is not flagged on the tops and GPS is not permitted for navigation.

Distances and categories:

  • Long course: 35.5 km, 2515 m ascent, Category AL
  • Short course: 20.8 km, 1518 m ascent, Category AL

Start and finish are at Loweswater Village Hall (grid NY140211). Free parking for runners is available in Loweswater (NY143211) opposite the phone box. Minimum age is 18 or older. Entries open 1 April 2026 and close 1 July 2026. Entry fees are listed as £15 for FRA members and £17 for non members.

Competitors must carry the full FRA kit list; there will be a full kit check before registration and those without required kit will not be allowed to race. Weather on the tops can be cloudy and runners may be alone at times. Refreshments are provided at the finish. The long course forms part of the Lakeland Classics Trophy.
