Ode to Laz Michigan Backyard Ultra : Holly State Recreation Area
Ode to Laz Michigan Backyard Ultra is a Last Person Standing backyard format race held at Holly State Recreation Area. Competitors repeat a measured trail loop each hour; the last runner who completes one more lap than all other contestants is declared the winner.
The primary loop is a 4.167 mile trail route with approximately 350 feet of climbing. The surface is roughly two thirds technical single track and one third moderate walking path, with a few hundred yards of pavement. Night laps move to a paved park road out-and-back with about 250 feet of climbing on that section. Bathrooms are available at various locations along the course.
Race rules require contestants to complete each lap within the hour without outside assistance. Contestants provide their own aid; pacers are not permitted and crew are allowed and may come and go. No hiking poles and no headphones are allowed on the trails. Water is provided on site. Camping is available at McGinnis Campground and limited overnight vehicle parking and 10 by 10 canopy spaces are offered first-come, first-served. A daily per-car park entry fee is charged by the state and is not included in race entry.
Prizes for on-site runners include a champion varsity jacket and free individual entry to an Ode race for the following 12 months for the last runner standing. The 2026 champion may receive a Silver Ticket toward USA national backyard team consideration if they meet USA eligibility rules. Virtual entrants are not eligible for prizes or at-large backyard rankings. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
