Ode to Laz Michigan Backyard Ultra

Event format

Ode to Laz Michigan is a backyard ultra held in Holly, Michigan. Contestants run a 4.167 mile loop and must be at the start line each hour to begin the next lap. Runners repeat the loop as long as they wish and must complete each lap within the hour. Pacers are not permitted; contestants provide their own aid. Crew are permitted and may leave and return. Packet pickup is on race morning at assigned starting areas.

Course and logistics

Distances:

  • 4.167 miles - trail loop, about 350 feet of climbing
  • 4.167 miles - night road loop, about 250 feet of climbing

The trail loop is roughly two thirds technical single track and one third moderate walking path, with a few hundred yards of pavement. There are bathrooms along the course. Water is provided. No hiking poles or headphones are allowed on trails. Overnight parking for one vehicle is available for full-event entrants; 10'x10' canopy or tent space is first-come, first-served. Camping is available at McGinnis campground in the north half of Holly State Recreation Area. A daily per-car park entry fee is charged by the state and is not included in the race entry.

Prizes and qualification

The race is affiliated with Big’s Backyard. The winner receives the Ode champion’s varsity jacket and a free individual entry for the following 12 months. Assists receive discounted entries. The 2026 champion wins a Silver Ticket toward the USA national backyard team if the winner is USA-eligible; if not, the Silver Ticket is unclaimed. There is no rolldown process.
