Ode to Laz Michigan Backyard Ultra

Ode to Laz is a backyard ultra held at Holly State Recreation Area near McGinnis campground. The event uses the Last Person Standing format and offers an Oak Flats 3HR option, a Bronze registrant category, and a virtual entry.

Runners repeat a 4.167 mile loop each hour and must be standing at the start line to begin the next lap. Contestants provide their own aid; pacers are not permitted and crew are allowed. Each lap must be completed within the hour and virtual entrants are not eligible for on-site prizes or at-large backyard rankings.

Course details:

  • 4.167 mile trail loop, approximately 350 feet climbing
  • 4.167 mile night loop, approximately 250 feet climbing on park road

The trail loop is mostly single-track with some moderate hiking path and short pavement sections. Bathrooms are available at various locations on course. Water is provided by organizers. Packet pickup occurs race morning at each assigned starting area; assignments are communicated before the race.

On-site logistics include parking for one vehicle overnight for full event entrants, limited canopy or tent space on a first-come, first-served basis, and campground camping at McGinnis. Alcohol is permitted but glass containers are prohibited. No hiking poles or headphones are allowed on trails.

The race is Big's Backyard affiliated. The winner may earn the Silver Ticket for USA national backyard team eligibility if they claim USA affiliation. Prizes and entry discounts are awarded to finishers and assists as specified by the organizer. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
