Ode to Laz Michigan Backyard Ultra
The Ode to Laz Michigan Backyard Ultra is scheduled for July 17, 2027 in Holly, MI at Holly State Recreation Area near 5000 McGinnis Road. The event is organized by The Ode Races and follows the Last Person Standing backyard ultra format. An Oak Flats 3 hour option is offered for shorter participation.
The standard loop is a 4.167 mile trail route that runners repeat as long as they wish. Runners must be standing at the start line to begin each new lap and must complete each lap within the hour with no outside assistance. The event switches to a paved closed park road for the night loop and returns to the trail for daytime laps.
Course details for the 4.167 mile trail loop include approximately 350 feet of climbing, about two thirds technical single track, one third moderate walking path, and a few hundred yards of pavement. The night loop follows an out and back to Fisherman’s Bridge with about 250 feet of climbing on the park road. Bathrooms are located along the course and water is provided.
Rules and logistics note that contestants must provide their own aid, pacers are not permitted, crew are permitted, camping and limited overnight parking are available at the McGinnis campground, glass is prohibited, and no hiking poles or headphones are allowed on the trails. Entry fees range from USD 76.86 to 141.93 and registration closes July 14, 2027. The race is affiliated with Bigs Backyard for at-large championship consideration. On-site prize items, a champion jacket for the winner, and entry credits for winners and assists are stated; virtual runners are not eligible for prizes or at-large qualification.
