Route and Terrain

The North Tyneside Trail is a multi-terrain race covering approximately 12 km. The course starts on the beach at Watts Slope in Whitley Bay and follows a route across the sand toward the clifftops. Participants traverse coastal paths leading to Seaton Sluice before entering the trails and mud of Holywell Dene. The final sections utilize the local Waggonways and conclude with a partial lap of the running track at Churchill Playing Fields. The profile is undulating and includes hills within the Holywell Dene area.

Facilities and Race Day

Race Headquarters is located at the North Shields Poly clubhouse at Churchill Playing Fields. The facility provides toilets, changing areas, and baggage storage. The race start is positioned at the War Memorial at Spanish City, a ten-minute walk from the headquarters. Race numbers are collected on the day of the event from 8:30 am. Post-race refreshments, including hot and cold beverages and various baked goods, are available for purchase at the clubhouse. This event does not provide water stations or distance markers along the course.

Participant Information

The event has an entry limit of 600 runners and is not suitable for wheelchair athletes. Instead of a medal, participants receive a buff. There are no refunds for entries, but name changes are permitted through the registration platform. A coastal race on 19 April 2026 from South Shields Pier to Roker Pier, about 7 miles along cliff paths past Marsden Rock and Souter Lighthouse. Entries open 2 February with separate fees for UKA registered and non registered runners.

Beyond Newcastle offers 55 km and 25 km trail runs from the Swing Bridge on Newcastle Quayside on 25 April 2026, with signed riverside routes, marshals, feed stations and live chip-timing.

A series of organised trail races by Trail Outlaws with distances from 5K to Half Marathon, fully marked and marshalled. Series entry offers a discount and a presentation evening; routes are noted as scenic and well signposted.

Evening trail runs at Gibside National Trust on 29 April 2026 across historic woodland and designed landscape. Distances of 5 km and 10 km, live chip timing, canicross friendly, on-site parking and finishers' medals.
