North Fork 50 Mile and 50K
The North Fork event on May 30, 2026 is a trail ultramarathon held in the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area near Buffalo Creek, Colorado. Distances offered include:
- 50 Mile
- 50K (31.1 miles)
Both courses are described as 100 percent soft surface, composed almost entirely of singletrack with a few short sections of double track. Runners pass through areas burned in the 1996 Buffalo Creek fire, stands of ponderosa pine, and sections with granite rock formations. The 50 Mile lists about 6,425 feet of total elevation gain and a maximum elevation near 8,535 feet. The 50K lists about 3,670 feet of total elevation gain and a maximum elevation near 8,150 feet.
Aid stations are placed along each course with offerings that range from water only to hydration and food. Certain aid stations permit crew access and drop bags, while others do not; restrooms are available at some locations. Course markings use orange and black polka dot ribbons and orange pin flags; blue and white checkered ribbons indicate the wrong way. Pacers are not permitted, though family or friends may run in to the finish for the final mile.
A portion of race proceeds supports the North Fork Volunteer Fire Department. Finishers receive a commemorative award and top three male and female finishers in each distance receive special awards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
