Niwot's Challenge
Niwot's Challenge is an invitation and acceptance only navigation event near Sedalia, Colorado, listed as the 14th annual edition on May 1, 2027. The field is limited to 40 participants and the start and finish are along the South Platte River. The organizers state that the event is not a race and that course details remain unpublished; participants must navigate using maps and compass and retrieve unique codes at designated Sacred Waypoints to complete the route.
Entry uses a short application window in January with selections made by priority categories: the first five applicants in a chief category, up to 15 returning applicants, up to 15 first-time applicants, and a small number of organizer wild cards; a waitlist is used if oversubscribed. Organizers require participants to understand paper map and compass use and state that GPS devices are not allowed on course; phones are permitted for emergency use only. Mandatory items include a course map, whistle, emergency blanket or bivy, headlamp or flashlight, at least 2 liters of liquids, a light jacket, and sufficient calories for 12 hours. Historical data note 219 total attempts, 34 individuals earning Chief status (48 Chief finishes, 21.9% success rate), and no Deity finishes to date.
