Sedalia, United States • 2 May 2026

Event overview

Niwot’s Challenge is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026, and is listed as the 13th annual running. The event has a runner capacity of 40 and uses a start/finish location along the South Platte River in Sedalia, CO. Access is by invitation and acceptance only; applications are accepted during a limited window (January 19-21, 2026) and the field is selected shortly after. The selection order prioritizes the first five applicants, then designated groups (returning applicants and first-time applicants) with additional wild cards, and a waitlist is used if more than 40 apply. Historically, there have been 194 attempts, 42 Chief finishes (reported as 30 individuals), and no Deity completions.

The course is unpublished and includes extended off-trail navigation, occasional dirt roads, and faint trail segments. Navigation and self-reliance are emphasized: GPS is not allowed on course, phones are for emergency use only, and participants must be able to use a paper map and compass or follow another registered navigator. Participants receive official course materials and logistical dispatches only after acceptance.
