Niwot’s Challenge is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026, and is listed as the 13th annual running. Course, formats, and requirements
The course is unpublished and includes extended off-trail navigation, occasional dirt roads, and faint trail segments. Navigation and self-reliance are emphasized: GPS is not allowed on course, phones are for emergency use only, and participants must be able to use a paper map and compass or follow another registered navigator. Participants receive official course materials and logistical dispatches only after acceptance.
Distances and formats:
- ~24 miles - Burn Loop; +10,000' / -10,000'; 16 hour limit
- ~50 miles - Chief's Loop; +20,400' / -20,400'; 30 hour limit
- ~100 miles - Deity goal (both loops twice); +40,800' / -40,800'; 60 hour limit
Mandatory gear includes a course map, whistle, emergency blanket or bivy, headlamp/flashlight, at least 2 L of fluids, a light jacket, and 12 hours of calories. Attendance at pre-event "Book Settings" is encouraged and may affect invitation decisions. Entry fee is listed as free; donations are encouraged.
