Niwot's Challenge

Sedalia, United States • 2 May 2026

Event Overview

Niwot's Challenge is not a traditional race but a navigational adventure on Colorado's Front Range. The event has a runner capacity of 40 and takes place along the South Platte River near Sedalia, Colorado.

The Experience

The course is not published in advance and navigation requires a map and compass, as GPS devices are not allowed. Participants must find specific "Sacred Waypoints" along the route to retrieve unique codes. The event emphasizes self-reliance, with minimal aid available. It is described as suitable for participants with significant experience in ultrarunning, orienteering, or adventure racing.

Participation Levels

There are three levels of participation, each with its own time limit and distance.

  • Burn "Training Run": A loop of approximately 24 miles with 10,000 feet of elevation gain, to be completed within 16 hours.
  • Chief's Status "Fun Run": Completion of both the Burn and Chief's loops, totaling approximately 50 miles and 20,400 feet of elevation gain, within 30 hours.
  • Deity Status: Completion of both loops twice—once in each direction—totaling approximately 100 miles and 40,800 feet of elevation gain, within 60 hours. A prize purse is offered for the first person to achieve this.

Application and Entry

Entry is by application only during a specific window. An entry fee is not required, but a donation is encouraged. Accepted participants will receive course maps and details before the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
