Mweelrea

Mweelrea is a mountain race in County Mayo that starts and finishes at Silverstrand car park. The planned course is 10.70 km with 766 m of climb and is classified as a difficult mountain event due to terrain, ascent and distance. GPS is not allowed for the race. The event counts for the Irish Championship and the Connacht Championship.

The route begins at Silverstrand car park, follows a road for about 1 km, then a farmers track for roughly 500 m and out through a gate. Competitors are then on their own until they reach the col, the low point between two peaks. The 1 km from the col to the summit is marked with IMRA flags and this marked section must be followed both up and down. From the col the return to the gate and the descent to the finish are on unmarked ground. A faint track via the river may be present; in poor visibility some tracks do not lead to the river.

Mandatory Level C kit must be carried and will be checked at registration. Required items include a waterproof jacket with integrated hood and taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile with emergency number, foil blanket or bivvy, waterproof full leg cover, means to carry at least 500 mL water, emergency food, map and compass. The kit to be carried may be finalised at registration depending on conditions. Failure to have required items can result in denial of entry or disqualification. Registration takes place at Silverstrand car park and includes sign in, number collection and kit check. Parking is at Silverstrand car park; access is via the road through Louisburgh which is narrow at points. Prizegiving will be at Silverstrand car park.
