Mweelrea Mountain Race

Mweelrea is a mountain running event located in County Mayo, forming part of both the Irish Championship and the Connacht Championship leagues. The race covers a distance of 10.70 km with a total ascent of 766 meters. The event is classified with a difficulty rating of 9, characterized by difficult terrain and significant climbing.

The course begins and ends at the Silverstrand car park. Participants follow a road for 1 km before transitioning to a farmers track for 500 meters. After passing through a gate, runners navigate towards the col, the low point between two visible peaks. While much of the route is not marked and requires self navigation, the 1 km section between the col and the summit is marked with flags. Runners must follow this specific marked path both during the ascent and the descent. The return leg from the col to the gate is free route, though a faint track exists near the river.

Strict mandatory safety equipment requirements are in place for this event. Technical gear categorized as Level C mandatory kit includes:

  • Waterproof jacket with hood
  • Hat or buff and gloves
  • Whistle and foil blanket
  • Waterproof full leg cover
  • Map and compass
  • Mobile phone and food
  • Minimum 500 mL water

The event has an entry limit of 250 participants. Registration takes place at the Silverstrand car park, where kit checks are performed. GPS devices for navigation are not permitted during the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
