Mweelrea, County Mayo
Mweelrea is a mountain running event held on 13 June 2026 in County Mayo. The planned course is approximately 10.70 km with 766 m of climb. The event is listed as difficult terrain with notable ascent and distance. The route is not fully waymarked and GPS use is not permitted. The race forms part of the Irish Championship and the Connacht Championship.
The route starts at Silverstrand car park. Runners follow a road for about 1 km, then a farmers track for roughly 500 m and exit through a gate. From the gate runners navigate to the col, the low point between two peaks. The 1 km section from the col to the summit will be marked with IMRA flags and this marked section must be followed both uphill and downhill. From the col back to the gate the route is unmarked; a faint track via the river may be present but other tracks can be misleading in poor visibility. The finish is at Silverstrand car park.
Participants must carry Level C mandatory kit. Required items include a waterproof jacket with integrated hood and taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with emergency number stored, foil blanket or bivvy bag, waterproof full leg cover, means to carry at least 500 mL of water, emergency food, and map and compass. All runners must present the kit for check at registration; the specific kit to be carried may be finalised on the day. Failure to have required items may result in denied entry or disqualification and random kit checks may be carried out.
Parking is available at Silverstrand car park. IMRA has reserved camping pitches at Connemara Caravan and Camping Park with showers and a campers kitchen; campsite rules include a 10 pm quiet time and restrictions on open fires. Prizegiving will be at Silver Strand car park. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
