Western Way - Maam to Leenane
This is a 60 km mountain ultra in County Galway on Saturday 14 November 2026. The route is an out and back on the Western Way, starting and finishing in Leenane and running to Maum, with one or two diversions planned to increase elevation and distance and to be confirmed by early August. Total climb is 1,420 m.
The event is rated Event Difficulty 9 (3,3,3) indicating difficult terrain, more than 500 m ascent and a distance over 10 km. Race marking will cover only major junctions and GPS is allowed. There is a cap of 50 places due to permit restrictions. The race is the final event in the Irish Ultra Championships.
Participants must carry mandatory Level C kit: a waterproof jacket with integrated hood and taped seams; a hat or buff; gloves; a whistle; a charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored; a foil blanket or bivvy bag; waterproof full leg cover; means to carry a minimum of 500 mL of water; emergency food; and a map and compass. The specific kit to be carried on race day may be finalised at registration. Random kit checks may be carried out and missing required items may lead to denied entry or disqualification.
