MTC Gancanagh

The MTC Gancanagh is a single-day ultra marathon covering a total distance of 52.4 miles. The race starts at the Woodfield Hotel in Clifden, Galway, and concludes at the Westport Woods Hotel & Spa. This event is part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge Series and serves as Day 9 of the fourteen-day MizMal challenge across Ireland.

The route primarily follows the MizMal path provided by Wild Atlantic Cycling. Participants navigate through various terrains with approximately 2,942 ft of ascent and 2,940 ft of descent. The event is self-navigated; while a tracking device is provided, runners must carry their own GPS device or compass and the maps provided by the organizer.

There are four designated checkpoints along the course:

  • CP1: Dawros More at 10.2 miles
  • CP2: N59 at 20.8 miles
  • CP3: Lettereeragh at 30 miles
  • CP4: Cuilmore at 41 miles

This is a cup-free event, meaning participants must carry their own reusable drinking vessel. Standard checkpoint food typically includes items such as malt loaf, cake, sandwiches, and various drinks. A minimum average pace of 4 mph is required to remain in the race.

Mandatory equipment includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, whistle, mobile phone, emergency food pack, and a basic first aid kit.
