MTC Gancanagh overview

The MTC Gancanagh is a point to point ultra running event covering 52.4 miles and 2,942 ft of ascent. The route starts at the Woodfield Hotel, Clifden, County Galway and finishes at Westport Woods Hotel & Spa. The course follows much of the MizMal route and is organised as Day 9 of the fourteen day MTC MizMal Ireland series.

Entries are limited to 20 standard competitors with an additional allowance of 20 MizMal competitors, giving a maximum field of 40. All entrants must meet the organiser age requirement of at least 20 years on race day. Entry fees are listed at £90 for the standard race and £155 for a Plus Race Package that includes an embroidered race shirt and a lightweight hi-viz race jacket when ordered at least four weeks before the event. All payments are non refundable; a defer option is available for a fee.

The race uses preset cutoffs based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph and has staffed check points along the route at roughly 10.2, 20.8, 30.0, and 41.0 miles. Competitors are issued tracking devices with an SOS function and maps and GPX files are provided to entrants before the event. The race is cup free so competitors should bring a reusable cup.

Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food. All finishers receive a bespoke Gancanagh medal and male and female champions receive trophies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
